After you create an account, you can manage the campaign tagging settings that determine how campaigns will be attributed and tracked in Google Analytics.

Attribution Model:

Some organizations prefer to attribute their online conversions to the very first campaign, instead of the most recent. Google Analytics, by default, attributes the conversion to the most recent campaign.

CampaignAlyzer provides the option to track use by either model. If the first-touch tracking model is preferred, CampaignAlyzer will append the “utm_nooverride=1“ query parameter to the end of all tagged URLs.

To modify the conversion attribution:

  1. Select Settings > Tagging Manager from the side bar menu.
  2. Under Tagging Settings select the desired conversion attribution: Last Referral or First Referral.
  3. Click Save to save settings.

Parameter Separator:

Most websites use the question mark (?) sign to indicate the beginning of the query string, but some websites use the hash (#) sign as the query string delimiter.

For the sites that use the hash (#) sign as a parameter separator, CampaignAlyzer provides the option to tag the URLs with the correct campaigns parameters.

Note: Read this help topic to learn more about how to configure the Google Analytics code to recognize the hash (#) sign as the query string delimiter.

To modify the Query String Delimiter:

  1. Select Settings > Tagging Manager from the side bar menu.
  2. Under Tagging Settings select the desired query string delimiter: The default question mark (?) sign or the hash (#) sign.
  3. Click Save to save settings.

Tagged URL case

Campaign parameters can come in a mixture of upper and lower case due to inconsistent tagging naming convention. This can cause visits to be spread out over different entries in the traffic sources report, which makes analysis more difficult. CampaignAlyzer provides the option to force all campaign parameters to lower case, consolidating entries and making for easier reporting and analysis.

To modify the Tagged URL case:

  1. Select Settings > Tagging Manager from the side bar menu.
  2. Under Tagging Settings select the desired case: Default or Lowercase.
  3. Click Save to save settings.

Tagging Parameters

If your organization is already using different tracking variables than the default Google Analytics parameters to tag your online links, you can map these existing variables to Google Analytics’ campaign tracking variables. CampaignAlyzer has the flexibility to use any campaign tracking variables you prefer. For example, your campaign tracking variables may use “keyword” instead of “utm_term” to identify the keyword or use “cid” instead of “utm_campaign” to identify the campaign name.

To modify the Tagging Parameters:

  1. Select Settings > Tagging Manager from the side bar menu.
  2. Under Tagging Parameters, update the default Google Analytics campaign tracking variables you would like to override with your own campaign tracking variables.
  3. Click Save to save settings.

Note: Read this help topic to learn more about how to configure the Google Analytics code to recognize custom campaign tracking variables.

To Reset the Tagging Parameters to Default:

  1. Select Settings > Tagging Manager from the side bar menu.
  2. Under Tagging Parameters, click the Reset To Default Tags button.
  3. Click Save to save settings.

Tracking Campaigns Across Multiple Analytics Tools

If your organization is using multiple web analytics tools to track your web traffic, then it is more than likely that the five default Google Analytics UTM parameters are not sufficient, and you need extra parameters to pass campaign information to the additional analytics tool.

CampaignAlyzer offers this option and allows you to specify a sixth query parameter to use to push campaign information to your desired analytics tool. You may opt to leave blank if not needed.

To add a new query parameter:

  1. Select Settings > Tagging Manager from the side bar menu.
  2. Under Tagging Parameters, add your additional campaign tracking variable. (i.e. cid)
  3. Click Save to save settings.
